Corisa and Brandy propped Jennie against the back of the outhouse. As soon as they let her go she sank to the ground. Perspiration clung to her upper lip and forehead. Sheâd cautioned them to leave her and run into the woods while they had a chance, but they hadnât listened.
She didnât quite understand why she was reacting in such a frantic way to the approaching car. All she knew was that someone had nearly killed her and she didnât know who. Jennie was almost afraid to remember anything. What if whoever had left her for dead was someone she knew?
Theyâd brought her here to this cabin. It could have been someone who knew Brandy and Corisa.
The girls stood watch on either side of her, peering around the corner, waiting for the vehicle to come into sight.
âItâs Dad!â The words came out in a swish as Brandy stepped from her hiding place and ran into the yard.
Corisa slipped her arm under Jennieâs and helped her up. âYouâll be okay now. Weâll get you to a hospital.â
A sudden, terrifying thought slammed into Jennieâs head. What if their father was the one whoâd brought her here?
Her fears were partially allayed as she watched the man emerge from the car and pull Brandy into his arms.
âDad, I am so glad you came back. Did you find the phone?â
âYou didnât bring it?â He closed the car door and ran a hand through his thick black hair, making it stand on end. âHoney, you know better.â
Brandy explained what sheâd done.
Adjusting his glasses he said, âNo wonder you didnât answer. You had me so worried. I headed out last night, but the state patrol stopped me just out of Cougar. I had to spend the night in a hotel and wait for the roads to open.â
âWe knew you would come eventually.â Brandy looped an arm through his and dragged him forward. âWe really needed it this time. We found this girlâââ
âGirl? What girl?â Their fatherâs gaze shot to Jennie and Corisa.
âGood grief. What happened?â
âWe donât know for sure. Brittany ⦠Well, thatâs not really her name. We gave it to her. Lucy found her in the woods last night, and we brought her here,â Brandy explained. âSheâs hurt really bad. Corisa thinks she has a concussion. Somebody beat her up and shot her in the leg. If we hadnât found her sheâd probably be dead â¦â
âWhoa. Slow down.â His expression was one of concern as he looked Jennie over. âMaybe weâd better get her into the house. She doesnât look like she should be walking around.â Taking his cell phone out of his pocket, he called the authorities and gave them directions. He handed Brandy the phone and helped Corisa take Jennie back inside. âWhile weâre waiting I want you to tell me exactly what happened.â
Once theyâd made Jennie comfortable on the couch and the girls had explained how they found their mystery girl in the woods, Mr. Graham brought in a chair from the dining area and set it next to Jennie.
